In our community, there are hard-working families who don’t have a decent home. Some desperately need a safe, affordable place to live.
In 2009, Jamie and her family moved to the Treasure Coast from Indiana because Jamie’s doctors recommended she live somewhere warm, without ice and snow. After several surgeries, Jamie became wheelchair bound for a time, yet thankfully, after extensive physical therapy, she is able to walk again with the help of crutches.
In 2017, Hurricane Irma damaged Jamie and her family’s St. Lucie County home. Jamie, her mother Shirley, and daughter Alicia, are three generations of women forced to remain in their damaged home because they are unable to find affordable, disability compliant housing. With limited safe space in their home, Shirley sleeps in the garage, without air conditioning, and because of her disability, Jamie is confined to a few rooms in their two-bedroom, multi-story home.
Jamie, Shirley, and Alicia need a safe, simple, and affordable home that will help them regain the strength, stability, and self-reliance that all families need.
